Understanding Toxicology with Print - TetraPak

A rare opportunity to visit and learn about research happening at the MRC Toxicology Unit in Cambridge, and explore related images with a TetraPak printmaking workshop.
The unit is a leading international research institute based in Cambridge. Their mission is to carry out pioneering research and understand the links between exposure to various chemicals, toxins and pharmaceutical agents and how they cause toxicity in the human body. By determining any risks to health from drug and environmental exposures, they aim to improve health by making our medicines and environment safer. The Unit was established in 1947 and relocated to Cambridge in 2020.
Researcher Vitalina Chamberlain-Evans is a 1st year PhD student in the Thaventhiran lab at the Unit. She studied immunology, molecular biology and bioinformatics and has been studying immunotoxic responses since 2011.
The Thaventhiran lab at the Unit broadly study the impacts of different ‘toxic insults’ on our immune response. This could include things like obesity, age, RNA therapeutics and cancer treatments. Vitalina’s project involves trying to identify which lymphocytes – the cells responsible for making antibodies – might react badly to vaccines and cancer therapies – a problem known as immunotoxicity. She is trying to understand more about these cells like what proteins they have on their surface, which antibodies they produce, and how they bind to their targets. This is done by looking at cells individually but analysing thousands at a time. All of this could help us predict potential adverse immune reactions in time, which is critical for improving the safety and effectiveness of immunological treatments.
Cardboard cut is a relief printing process in which the layers of card are cut and peeled away leaving the different levels of raised areas, or the card surface scored, textured or cut into. The card plate is then inked and printed. Learn how to plan and cut and print an image using this sensitive technique. On this course, you will interpret images from Vitalina’s research using TetraPak images.

• Examples & demonstration of TetraPak printing and techniques by Curwen Tutors.
• Create an original image scoring, incising and marking the TetraPak material.
• Short tour of the Research department followed by lunch.
• Printing your TetraPak image and experimenting with colour and layering.

There is an option to book your place for £100 deposit. If you choose this option your place is secured. The balance of term 1 will be due 20 working days before the start of the course. If you cancel more than 20 working days before the course start date, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee. If your place is not cancelled during this timescale, and the balance is not paid then the deposit is non refundable. All other Terms & Conditions remain the same. Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
For CPSC Certificate course
Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.
If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.
