Neil Bousfield - Masterclass in Colour Relief Engraving

Neil Bousfield RE is a British artist and printmaker working within relief printmaking and contemporary wood engraving. His process uses multiple blocks and reduction methods to create overlays of tone, pattern, colour and image to explore the creation and fragility of place and home. The work considers and questions attachment to place and the fragility of coastal communities, and aims to position the local within a global narrative, that of sea-level rise. Neil's work is held in collections including: The Ashmolean Museum; The V&A; Pallant House; MMU Special Collections; The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Shi; and The Heilongjiang Museum of Printmaking, China

Neil will show examples of his work and take you through the processes and techniques used. The objective is to give you the experience and knowledge to fully explore colour relief printing and engraving.

Course structure
• Introduction to the techniques and processes and view examples of Neil’s prints
• Discuss different approaches to printing using reduction and multiple block methods
• Learn about making your own blocks and how to use and sharpen cutting tools
• Cut and experiment with tools and mark making
• Explanation of colour methods and approaches, and registration methods  
• Consider layers and transparent colours, to create layers of colours and tones from multiple blocks.

Pre course information
Students should come prepared with: sketches and drawings, size 7cm x 10cm. Tools are provided but you can bring your own engraving tools if you wish.

Experience level

Suitable for those with experience of relief engraving/cutting wishing to explore working with colour.

For all courses except CPSC Certificate course

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.

There is an option to book your place for £100 deposit. If you choose this option your place is secured. The balance of term 1 will be due 20 working days before the start of the course. If you cancel more than 20 working days before the course start date, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee. If your place is not cancelled during this timescale, and the balance is not paid then the deposit is non refundable. All other Terms & Conditions remain the same. Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.

For CPSC Certificate course

Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.

If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.
