Etching Tone using Traditional Rosin Aquatint with Dry Point

This new course introduces you to the traditional application of powdered rosin, using an aquatint box, as a means of creating areas of tone to a metal plate. The technique used for centuries to achieve fine tonal effects, rosin aquatint is beautiful and distinctive.

During the day, you will learn how to scratch an image directly into your metal plate using a drypoint needle. You will then learn how to safely apply and fuse a fine dusting of rosin, before step-etching the plate in copper sulphate. Different areas of tone are achieved by applying an acid-resist (‘stop out’) to protect discrete areas of the image in a staged fashion. This allows you to vary the amount of time different areas are exposed to, and thus etched, by the copper sulphate.

On this course you will learn how to create an A5 size etching and print it successfully on an etching press. By the end of the course, you will have created a small variable edition of prints to take home.
