Chris Orr RA – Masterclass in Hybrid Printmaking

“I have always been fascinated by printing. From an early age I visited printing works because my father was in the trade. When I became an artist I realised that printmaking was the extension of all that wonderful print technology that has transformed the world. Essentially, creative printmaking is a hybrid version of commercial printing techniques, so hybridity is at the core.”

Currently his intaglio work has been in engraving on plastic, he is also a great enthusiast for lithography in all it’s forms. The marriage of the clear sharpness of the intaglio line and tone with the softness and fluidity of lithography is beautiful. Add to that the power of relief print and you can have terrific results.  He is appreciative of sophisticated techniques but at the core of his practice he values simplicity and directness.

Chris will demonstrate the techniques he uses to create his prints through making a work of his own in our studio using the combination of three different processes — intaglio, counter proof intaglio,
lithography, monoprint and relief.  You will then use the techniques to produce works of your own, with the demonstration of Chris’ hybrid techniques stimulating new combinations.

Course structure

  • Introduction to the ideas outlined above and showing some examples of prints of Chris’ that use hybrid processes.
  • On Day 1, using some existing drawn intaglio plastic plates Chris will demonstrate proofing these in various combinations, and draw up and process some litho plates to work in combination with the intaglio and print proofs of these together.
  • Chris will demonstrate cutting and using some paper relief shapes and proofing on to the other processes, and then cut some plastic relief shapes to print with mono print inking to proof onto other processes.
  • Participants will use the same processes to create their own individual layered hybrid prints.
