Further Wood Engraving – Masterclass with Anne Desmet RA

A perfect follow-up to the Beginners’ Course, building on skills learnt. Also suitable as a stand-alone course for those with some wood engraving experience. The course will cover a range of approaches to fine line and tonal engraving on end-grain woodblocks, using a wide range of specialist tools from Anne Desmet’s extensive collection (if students don’t already have their own). It will also involve more advanced use of tools for creating sophisticated tonal work. The course will also include a short introduction to the rich potential of creative collage using wood engraved prints.

Course structure
• Learn how to make independent engravings using your own drawing or photo to create small-scale black and white printed images.
• Learn how to make the best compositional use of your own imagery in engraved terms, factoring in issues such as the scale of your source imagery and the relative scale of a woodblock
• Ink and print their blocks by hand (on Japanese and European papers) and / or on one of the relief presses.

Pre-course information
