Artist Printmaker David Bethell is exhibiting a collection of lithographs that he has been working on at our studios over a number of years. David is based in West Suffolk and has been printing at the Study Centre since 2014. David has always been facinated by maps, in particular a map of Suffolk circa 1787/1793 engraved by John Cary. Accompanying the map is a written description of the county; it's products, principal rivers, members it returns to parliament and 'remarkable seats'. At the end of this description there is a list of eight "Places most remarkable for beautiful and extensive views". David started to consider what these notable views were at that time, and if they still existed today, over 200 years later.
The exploration of 'notable places' mentioned on this18th century map has been his focus of work since 2019. He will be showing works that depict eight Suffolk views from the 18th Century as they are today. The exhibition is in the gallery 14th June - 5th July, 10.00 - 4.00 Monday - Friday and selected Saturdays. All are welcome to come along, view the exhibition and meet the artist at the Private View on Saturday 21st June 11.00 - 3.00. Admission is free, with plenty of car parking available.
