Printed from Life: Drawing, Monoprint & Linocut

Artist & Printmaker Sam Marshall will lead you through this 2-day workshop, exploring drawing and looking at ways to turn your drawings into prints. Sketchbook drawings need reworking and rethinking to successfully produce a linocut print from them.
Sam studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art and completed her MA diploma at the Royal Drawing School where she now teaches. She lives in rural Northamptonshire with her miniature dachshund ‘Miss Marple’.
Sam draws inspiration from many sources – medieval margins and bestiaries, animal prints from the 1800’s, folk art, old children’s books, and real-life animals and landscapes that have something of the unusual about them.  Her work is influenced by the British aesthetic of artists such as Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden and Thomas Bewick. Her best-selling book LINOCUT book was published by Bloomsbury in 2023 and is currently working on a book about drawing which will be published in 2026.
Draw an extravagant autumnal still life in the studio, spending the first morning drawing using pencil and charcoal, producing quick expressive drawings. In the afternoon experiment with various forms of monoprinting. On the second day, continue to draw from the still life, this time exploring how to draw for linocut and investigate how this approach differs. Select one of your drawings to transform into an A6 single colour linocut.
