This one-day course concentrates on how to create different textures, tones and effects for inking up lino blocks.
Paul Catherall, is renowned for his clean, bold architectural linocuts. His prints are created entirely by hand in a painstaking relief process that can take several weeks to complete. Lead by Paul you will create prints using his techniques to overlay colours and create textures.
Paul draws much of his subject matter from London’s modernist and brutalist landmarks, including the Hayward Gallery, National Theatre, Barbican and Trellick Tower.
His commissions include the Royal Shakespeare Company, Southbank Centre, Penguin Books, Pallant House Gallery, Higgins Bedford Gallery and British Airways. He has been one of London Transport’s most popular and prolific poster artists, with artworks featuring Tate Modern, Hackney Empire and the wider London skyline.
Paul is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. He has exhibited widely in group and solo shows, including at Eames Fine Art, Zillah Bell Gallery, Prizes include the Aberystwyth Print Purchase Prize and RE Guest Membership Award. A number of his prints are in the V&A collection.
Course structure
• The day would start with viewing examples of Paul’s prints where he has created different textures, tones and effects.
• Discuss your personal goals and objectives for the day, using your pre cut lino blocks
• Demonstrations and discussion on how Paul uses rollers and careful mixing of inks to create different effects to describe stone, concrete, foliage, wood etc. This includes how to create an effective fade and which colours create exciting overlays.
• Having fun with experimenting.
• End the day with an informal review of what’s been created during the course
Pre course information: This course is about inking techniques so attendees will need to bring pre cut lino blocks to use as overlapping multi blocks, either from previous course with Paul, or that have specifically prepared

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.
If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.
For CPSC Certificate course
Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.
If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.
There is an option to book your place for £100 deposit. If you choose this option your place is secured. The balance of term 1 will be due 20 working days before the start of the course. If you cancel more than 20 working days before the course start date, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee. If your place is not cancelled during this timescale, and the balance is not paid then the deposit is non refundable. All other Terms & Conditions remain the same.
Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
