CPSC: A Study in Lithography

An opportunity to study Lithography in depth.  The aim of the course is to provide a structured syllabus throughout a twelve-month period which seeks to give participants a firm technical grounding in the techniques of lithography on stone, alongside the opportunity to experience a diverse range of intermediate and advanced techniques in Stone Lithography.  This includes 12 x studio days, exhibition hanging day, Exhibition Opening & Private View, plus the opportunity for further studio days.

Duration: 
3 consecutive days followed by 1 day a month for 9 months, plus 2 days for the exhibition. Additional optional days available. 

Technical skills including:

• Stone handling and preparation
• Drawing techniques
• Chemical processing
• Printing

Conceptual skills development including:
• Awareness of historical development
• Visual development
• Problem solving
• Editioning

Further information

• February – December 2026 commencing with a 3 day introductory course followed by one taught day per month, a day hanging the end of course exhibition, and an exhibition opening and private view day. The core taught days will be on the last Wednesday of the month and will introduce specific topics
• Additional introduction to other lithographic processes which can be used in conjunction with stone, such as Prontoplate
• High level of technical support and individual tuition, enabling students to gain competence in a range of processes while exploring and developing their own creative ideas
• All stones, lithography presses, paper, inks, grinding facilities and drawing equipment will be available to use on all taught days. There is a small charge for materials used on any additional open access days booked
• All stones used by participants will be stored at the Curwen at all times 
• Opportunities for mentoring, and an opportunity to exhibit work at the end of the course
• Limited to 6 students, ensuring good access to equipment and bespoke tuition

CPSC Lithography Membership:
• All participants in the CPSC Year in Lithography will receive CPSC Lithography Membership for the duration of the course they are attending, as part of the course
• CPCS Lithography membership will enable course participants to book additional studio days in the Open Access studio to continue their personal development for a reduced daily fee of £30.00

• Day 2 – Materials, tools and drawing 
• Day 3 – Drawing on the stone and etching
• Day 4 – Printing, preparation and first proofs
• Day 5 – Drawing adjustments and additions
• Day 6 – Working with stencils and masks 
• Day 7 – Multi-colour work 
• Day 8 – Review & concept development
• Day 9 – Transfer techniques
• Day 10 – Supported personal development 
• Day 11 – Editioning & personal development
• Optional – Open Access day (additional cost) 
• Day 12 – Review & Exhibition preparation & planning

At the end of the course there will be an additional ‘Hanging & Curation Day’ for the Group Exhibition (date TBC with the group).  There will be a Private View for the exhibition (date and times TBC)

Payment / Terms and Conditions

For all courses except CPSC Certificate course

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.

For CPSC Certificate course

Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.

If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.

There is an option to book your place for £100 deposit. If you choose this option your place is secured. The balance of term 1 will be due 20 working days before the start of the course. If you cancel more than 20 working days before the course start date, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee. If your place is not cancelled during this timescale, and the balance is not paid then the deposit is non refundable. All other Terms & Conditions remain the same.

Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
