Introduction to Japanese Woodblock with Ralph Kiggell ARE
2 day course
10 & 11 June 2022
10am to 4pm
£215 including all materials
Ralph Kiggell originally studied in the early 1990s at the atelier of Toshi Yoshida, son of Hiroshi Yoshida, where he learned the fundamentals of the traditional water-based Japanese woodblock technique, known today as mokuhanga. He was later able to learn more contemporary woodblock methods in Kyoto with Akira Kurosaki, before continuing his studies to MA level at Tama Art University, Tokyo. Ralph’s work is held in many private and public collections, including the British Library & the Ashmolean Museum.
For this relief workshop, artist-printmaker Ralph Kiggell introduces the classic art and craft of Japanese water-based woodblock printing, commonly known today as mokuhanga. This beginners’ two-day workshop covers the basic tools, materials and process of this non-toxic technique, from block preparation and cutting, paper choice and preparation, to the fundamentals of printing itself. After producing a black and white print, students will be encouraged to develop a simple two-block, two-colour print, while embracing discovery and experimentation along the way.
• Introductory talk and looking at examples of Ralph’s original work.
• Introduction to the tools, materials and basic methods used in mokuhanga.
• Learn about block preparation and how to cut the blocks with a range of knives.
• How to mix and apply water-based pigments with horse-hair brushes to blocks.
• How to prepare and dampen Japanese washi paper.
• How to register prints and print by hand with a baren.
• Embrace discovery along the way!
