Cardboard Cuts with Charles Shearer RCA

Born in Kirkwall, Orkney in 1956 Charles Shearer studied at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen and at the Royal College of Art, London, specialising there in illustration. Since graduating in 1983, he has taught printmaking at numerous art schools alongside working on personal projects including commissions for books and magazines, such as Faber & Faber, poetry and prose magazine Ambit, and books by the poet George Mackay Brown.

On this 2 day course each day we will explore the techniques for cardboard cut printmaking and as such, it is possible to attend just 1 day if preferred.

Course structure
• Introductory talk and looking at examples of Charles’s original work
• Explanation of the cardboard cut technique
• Introduction to the tools, materials and methods used in cardboard cut printmaking
• Use and experiment with a range of tools - some made and adapted specifically for this technique - to add both texture and a distinct character to images
• How to apply inks
• The use of masking in creating an image
• How to print with a press and a baren

Experience level
• No previous experience necessary though some dexterity with a craft knife may be helpful.

For all courses except CPSC Certificate course

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £15.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.

Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre. Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.

For CPSC Certificate course

Payment of the deposit for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this deposit has been received. The outstanding balance for Term 1 is due before the start of Term 1 and payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be phased in a similar way. The receipt of your Term 1 deposit is acceptance of commitment to all 3 Terms of the Certificate course.
