Wooden type letterpress

Letterpress printing was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th contrary and is a relief printing technique using wood or metal type. The type is composed in a “chase” to create the desired text, inked up and paper pressed against it to transfer the ink from the type onto the paper. On this introductory course you will learn about typography, composition, inking and printing and will use the relief presses to print 4 x A5 cards or an A4 poster.

Course structure
• Explanation of Letterpress printing process and looking at examples
• Introduction to the equipment and explanation of the art and technique of typography
• Demonstration of composing, using “furniture” and quoins to create a “forme”
• Planning your text and creating your forme
• Use of rollers and how to ink up the forme
• Printing your forme

Experience level
• Beginners and/or those wishing to refresh their skills.

Payment / Terms and Conditions

For all courses except CPSC Certificate course

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received. If full payment is not received within 10 working days of a place being reserved, the booking will be assumed to be void.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £10.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 10 working days before the course start date. Cancellations received less than 10 working days before a course starts will require the full course fee to be paid.

Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.


For CPSC Certificate course

Payment of the deposit for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this deposit has been received. If the Term 1 deposit is not received within 20 working days of a place being reserved, the booking will be assumed to be void. The outstanding balance for Term 1 is due before the start of Term 1.

If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £10.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 20 working days before the course start date. Cancellations received less than 20 working days before a course starts will require the full course fee to be paid.
