Introduction to Stone and Photo Lithography with Thomas Cert TMP

Lithography translated literally means ‘to write on stone’. The process works on the principle that water and oil do not mix. The artwork is traditionally made on limestone using greasy materials, the stone is then treated chemically to produce two diametrically opposed surfaces, water loving and water repelling. The original drawing material is removed using solvent and replaced with oil based ink. The stones surface is kept damp while applying the ink so that the non-image areas remain clean. Essentially the film of water acts as a barrier between the stone and the ink. The paper is placed on the stone with a protective tympan material and the stone is run through a direct press at high pressure. The paper is then peeled off the stone to reveal the impression.

Photo-lithography uses the same process, however the artwork is drawn or printed on transparent films that are exposed with UV onto light sensitive plates. These plates are then developed leaving just your image, the plate is inked up the same way. By the end of this course you will take home a variable edition of 6 prints in A4/A3 sizes and a good grounding in the principles of lithography.
