History
The
Curwen Print Study Centre was established by Stanley Jones
Hon. D Litt. Master Printer and Director of The Curwen Studio
(http://www.thecurwenstudio.co.uk)
with Sam Alper managing director of Curwen Chilford Prints
as an educational Print making charity.
They
identified a need for fine Art Print making teaching for students
and artists against a background of growth within computer-generated
art and the declining provision and facilities within art
schools for fine art printing techniques.
The
aim of the study centre is to preserve and develop the experience
and skills which form a background to the concept of the artist's
original print.
The
study centre has the unique benefit of being situated adjacent
to the Curwen Studio (http://www.thecurwenstudio.co.uk)
allowing students and artists the opportunity to learn how
a commercial fine Art Print making editioning studio works.
Since
the formation of the Curwen Print Study Centre students from
schools, primary and senior, have benefited from the printmaking
experience along with University graduates.
Teachers
attending training workshops ensure Print making skills are
taken directly back into the classroom to enrich and support
the curriculum.
Print
making at The Curwen Print Study Centre responds to all ages
and abilities and delivers high quality education and experience
for all. Groups have come knowing nothing and left feeling
enriched.
Premises
The
current Print and Digital provision at The Print Study Centre
is designed to provide a total hands-on graphic environment.
We have the facilities and tutors to allow groups and individuals
the creative freedom to explore and experiment with a whole
range of equipment from the classic etching press through
to digital creation using Apple Macs.
The
rationale and emphasis of the Centre is to provide a "classic"
printmaking environment, which considers the digital to be
only a part of a whole learning experience. The actual size
of our facility (a converted Dutch barn) becomes a great advantage
here as you have the room to explore process without being
constricted by over cluttered architecture. We have the space
for your ideas to grow.
The
centre is particularly well serviced for Lithography (offset
and direct) both from stone and plate and also benefits from
having the famous Curwen Studio, literally next door, where
some of the most well known contemporary artists of the day
produce lithographs of the highest order.
Running
alongside Lithography, are the Relief printing, Etching and
the Screen presses which combine to facilitate the more traditional
aspects of Printmaking. Adjacent to these is our "Apple
Mac Suite" where the emphasis is on digital print output,
which in turn may combine with these other process bases.
The
Curwen Print Study Centre's current portfolio of group and
individually tailored courses, explains the extent to which
the centre can facilitate an open-minded attitude towards
learning to students and artists of all ages and abilities.
